This past Sunday, Pastor Brad Weir, Senior Pastor of City Church International, powerfully challenged us from 1 Peter 4:7–11 to live with the end in mind - devoting ourselves to prayer and loving one another deeply and sincerely.

“The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly…” 1 Peter 4:7-8a

Consider the significance of Peter calling for self-control and sobriety for the purpose of being available for prayer.

Another Aspect Of Sobriety To Consider

“Be sober forbids not only physical drunkenness but also letting the mind wander into any other kind of mental intoxication addiction which inhibits spiritual alertness or any laziness of mind which lulls Christians into a sin through carelessness…He knows how easily Christians can lose their spiritual concentration through ‘mental intoxication’ with the things of this world…We today might well consider the dangers presented by such inherently ‘good’ things as career, possessions, recreation, reputation, friendships, scholarship, or authority.” - Wayne Grudem, 1 Peter, p.81
