Philippians 1:27-2:2 Gospel Worthy Living

Pastor Keith Dollar, City Church Northside

When I first came to Christ I gave myself to evangelism. Everywhere I went I would share the gospel with folks, and I had a couple buddies who were passionate about doing the same. We would go down to Deep Ellum on the weekends, and we would ride the Dart Train and preach to the entire train and engage one-on-one with individuals. By the way, one of the guys who was baptized on Sunday, Jerry, was invited to our church back in June when we took the Youth Group from Hilltop Country Church down to the West End Dart Station. We partnered with our brothers and sisters from Oklahoma and saw some lives impacted through our efforts together!

Early on in my walk with Christ I read a statement by the missiologist, Peter Wagner, “the single most effective evangelistic methodology under heaven is planting new churches”.

That statement stuck with me. As I pondered it along with my strong desire to engage in the work of evangelism, I thought he was on to something big, and I began to desire to do the work of church planting.

I started to envision what it would look like to have a church full of people who are compelled by the love of Christ (2 Cor. 5:14) to reach the lost community.

I begin to envision what it would look like to have a group of “fishers of men” together side by side as unified and loving community following Jesus on mission (Matthew 4:19).

Instead of me fishing for men with my single pole and trying to reach people for Jesus and bring them into the church, as a group of loving community we could cast out nets “into the deep" and catch multitudes together and disciple them together.

At City Church Northside, two of our values are missional living and unified diversity. In Philippians 1:27, the Apostle Paul exhorts the Christians in Philippi to express the worth of the gospel by being steadfast (standing firm), united (striving together side by side), and courageous (V28-not frightened).

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel” Philippians 1:27 ESV

May we, with our way of life, express the worth of the Gospel of Jesus by steadfastly working together in love and courage in the face of opposition!
