Examples To Imitate - Philippians 2:17-30
Pastor Keith Dollar, City Church Northside
On Sunday, we explored the idea that Christians are called to imitate godly examples of Christlikeness. The Scripture is full of both good and bad examples; it’s full of examples to imitate and examples to avoid. We learn through the examples of others not only by what they say but also by what they do. Much of our own spiritual formation is caught rather than being taught in a classroom. Seeing truths applied and lived out in the lives of others inspires us, challenges us, motivates us, and stirs us up toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24). Paul pointed to two other examples to imitate in Philippians chapter 2, besides himself and Jesus, who was the ultimate example. He highlighted two men who may seem more ordinary to us, Timothy and Epaphroditus. As Christ followers, their lives were marked by an other-oriented focus, humble service, and sacrifice.
May we imitate them by cultivating the humble mindset of a servant, being ‘genuinely concerned for the welfare’ of others, especially the saints (Gal. 6:10) and those who appear unable to repay you (Luke 14:14).
May conduct our lives in such a way that is worthy of others imitating (Phil. 1:27).
